外国学者对翻译的界定

       一、18世纪英国著名学者约翰逊（Samuel Johnson）认为，翻译就是将一种语 言换成另一种语言，并保持原文的意思不变。（To translate is to change into another language, retaining as much of the sense as one can.）

        二、英国著名语言学家和翻译理论家卡特福德（J.C.Catford, 1965）认为，翻译 是用一种等值的语言的文本材料去替换另一种语言的文本材料。（The replacement of textual material in one language by equivalent textual material in another language.）卡特 福德认为翻译主要有两种存在状态，一种是源语，即译出语；另一种是目标语，即译 入语。。
 

      三、美国翻译理论家尤金？奈达（Eugene A.Nida，1969）认为，翻译是指从语义到文体在译语中用最切近且最自然的对等语再现源语的信息。（Translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message，first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of styles.）

       四、美国语言学家、翻译理论家罗曼。雅各布逊（Roman Jakoboson）认为，翻译 是用另一种语言解释原文的语言符号。（Translation is an interpretation of verbal signs by means of some other language.）这一定义是从符号学的角度对翻译进行的界定，但是 并没有对翻译的目标、标准等做深入的阐释。
       五、纽马克（Peter Newmark）认为，翻译就是把一个文本的意义按原作者所意 想的方式移人另一种文字。（Translation is a craft consisting in the attempt to replace a written message and/or statement in one language by the same message and/or statement in another language. Translation is rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way the author intended the text.）

       六、苏联语言学派翻译理论家费道罗夫（Fedorov）认为，翻译就是用一种语言把 另一种语言在内容与形式不可分割的统一中所有已表达出来的东西准确而完全地表达 出来。
       七、塞杰尔（J.C.Sager）认为，翻译是由外力激发，以信息科技为依托，随交际 方式的变化而变化的一种产业活动。（Translation is an externally motivated industrial activity, supported by information technology, which is diversified in response to the particular needs of this form of communication.）这一定义进一步扩大了翻译的外延， 将翻译视为一种产业活动，其动力来自外部，并以信息科技为辅助手段。
       八、罗杰？贝尔（Roger Bell）认为，翻译是把第一种语言（源语）语篇所表达 的东西用第二种语言（目标语）重新表达出来，尽量保持语义与语体方面的等值。
　　（Translation is the expression in another language （or target language） of what has been expressed in another source language, preserving semantic and stylistic equivalences.）美国翻译理论家劳伦斯韦努提（Lawrence Venuti, 1982）认为，翻译是译者依靠解释所提供的目标语中的能指链替代构成源语文本的能指链的过程。韦努提以 反传统的“对等”角度的定义，否定了结构主义所信奉的所指与能指或自荐的对应关 系，能指和所指是可以分裂的，符号与意义之间是不一致的，因此文本意义具有 不确定性。在韦努提看来，翻译只是用一种表层结构代替另一种表层结构。这么多学者的意见，想知道一下读者是怎么看到翻译公司的译者
